A love of learning

Milbourne Lodge School prioritises a robust preparatory program to prepare pupils comprehensively for their academic journey and beyond. Rooted in a nurturing environment, the school focuses on building a strong foundation for academic success, character development, and social skills.

The curriculum aims to instil a love for learning and equip pupils with essential skills, fostering a supportive community that prepares them both academically and emotionally for future challenges.

Years 3 & 4

Ages 7 to 9

Children enter the Prep school in Year 3 and the year group comprises two parallel classes. Both classes will be taught the majority of their lessons by their respective Form Tutor but will have specialist teachers for French, Science, Art, IT and Music. This gives pupils the security of working with their Form Tutor alongside opportunities to develop and branch out under the guidance of others.

In Year 4, the year group is introduced to specialist subjects such as Latin. Pupils can then begin to fine-tune their interests.

``Milbourne is a small, quirky school that values individuality and supports pupils on their academic journeys. The daily games lessons allow for a balanced school life.``

Years 5 & 6

Ages 9 to 11

Pre-Testing for entry to Senior Schools takes place in the Autumn Term of Year 6. Pupils are therefore prepared from Year 5 for the various requirements for this. Pupils receive designated lessons that focus on Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, along with significant preparation for the different styles of interview which they will inevitably face.

It is our aim in these crucial years to ensure our pupils feel confident and ready for the rigours of Pre-Testing. However, this does not take away from the curriculum’s breadth and depth. Our pupils have many opportunities to express themselves in Art, IT, Music, Sport and during Extra-Curricular activities such as Debate Club, Chatterbooks and Drama Club.

By Year 6 pupils’ personalities have truly begun to flourish. The more they engage with one another, the better their fluency, articulation and communication skills become. This is testimony to the work, experience, skill and encouragement of the academic staff.

Throughout these two years they face a diverse set of challenges. Ancient Greek is also introduced to the curriculum in Year 6.
