Reception – Ages 4 to 5

The teaching in our Reception class is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. This stage is the period of education up to the age of 5 years. Our Reception comprises two parallel classes.

The curriculum considers and incorporates the following seven areas of learning:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the world
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Expressive arts and design

Our goal is to enhance this core curriculum by providing challenging, fun opportunities for learning, while maintaining a strong emphasis on acquiring the basic tools vital to early schooling. We always remember that every day is an adventure and a time of discovery. However, we carefully structure the work to help children develop their skills and relationships. This enables them to reach their Early Learning Goals by the end of the Reception year. In fact most of our children exceed them.

We also recognise that all children develop and learn in different ways and at different speeds. It is therefore important to differentiate accordingly. This allows all our children to achieve and progress within an enabling environment that caters for their individual needs. By observing the children at both work and play we are able to continuously assess progress and attainment. We maintain a profile of each child’s development during their Reception year. This profile is shared with parents and staff at the end of Reception before each child moves into Year 1.
