MILBOURNE LODGE SCHOOL

 NEWSLETTER

 CHRISTMAS 2009

 Dear Parents

I can not ever remember a year when a school has finished for the Christmas holidays and it has looked outside like a ‘Winter Wonderland’.  As you can imagine there has been much excitement!

Our traditional Carol Service at Holy Trinity Church was well attended, despite the weather conditions!  Congratulations to all who took part as this really does mark the end of term and beginning of our various Christmas activities.  A magnificent £575 was collected to be divided between the 4 House charities.

The Chocolate Log Competition was hard fought this year, with all looking truly delicious and good enough to eat!

Winners of the boys’ group were:                       Winners of the girls’ group were:

1st         Jaeho Bae                                             1st         Ju Hyun Kim

2nd        Henry Lowe                                           2nd        Annabel Lewis

3rd         Archie Moore                                         3rd         Charlie Bawden

Congratulations to all who took part and to the parents who supplied the trimmings!

 SPORT

 Team Results

The 1st XI have had a modest season by Milbourne standards. Some notable successes and an equal number of frustrating defeats. Losing half of our fixtures is always disappointing. Fortunately the team, so ably captained by Marcus Monfared, was never dispirited and fought determinedly throughout.

There were wins against some formidable teams, 4-3 defeat of Cranmore and a 1-0 victory over Parkside the most memorable.

Unfortunately we were unable to play our usual fixture at Charterhouse, although we had enjoyable but tough games at Eton and against Bradfield.

No silverware this year, but we have ‘survivors’ who will be the nucleus for 2010, when we will commence battle once again.

Football colours were awarded to Marcus Monfared, Mubarak Mustapha, Henry Houghton and Tom Roche. All boys who played for the 1st XI performed commendably well and there was always an impressive spirit among the players. A great team effort.

Our gallant 2nd XI side suffered only three defeats in their nine encounters. Ably captained by Tom Benton the side played skilful football and produced competent performances against some robust opposition.

In the last two games of the season the 2nd XI scored twelve goals and it was disappointing for the team to end the season just as they were becoming a truly cohesive force.

Many thanks to all players who may have slipped from the 1st XI or rose from the ranks of the glorious 3rd XI. A fine spirit so typical of a Milbourne team.

The mighty 3rd XI recorded 5 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats; a very creditable effort, especially considering the number of different players who pulled on the hallowed shirt over the course of the season. Very well done to all the boys for their enthusiasm and competitive endeavour; thanks also to the parents for their keen support in some adverse weather conditions!

The U11’s football season may have started unpromisingly, with a number

of heavy defeats but by the latter stages of term, the squad had improved massively. This improvement was due to the intelligence, application and spirit of the players and the reward for this endeavour was an appearance in the final of the Surrey Prep Schools U11 Plate Competition, where the boys lost narrowly 0-1 to Hall Grove at the Chelsea FC training facility. Highlight of the season was the stunning 1 – 0 semi-final win over Homefield, with Max Hitchins grabbing the winner.  Well done to all those who played.

The U10A team improved considerably as the term progressed and recorded a particularly fine 2-0 victory over Parkside. Bearing in mind only two of the boys played A team football last year this was a side that exceeded expectation and is very encouraging for next season and the move to 11 a side.

The U9’s have had a difficult season altogether but have worked hard throughout and have made huge improvements as the term has progressed.  Hopefully the results will improve next season and produce a few deserved wins.

The Under 8 football team played in a triangular tournament held at Ripley Court which also involved Parkside.  The first fixture was a difficult match against Parkside which we lost narrowly.  The second match was against Ripley Court, A convincing 2-0 win.  The ‘B’ team narrowly lost both of their fixtures.  Every pupil involved this season has worked hard and we are looking forward to testing their rugby skills next term.

The girls have had 4 netball matches this half of term. Two losses for the U11s against Newland House have been followed by two wins – one for the U11/12s against Surbiton and the other for the U12s against Sir William Perkins School.

 GUMSHIELDS

As you are aware, we enter the rugby season next term. Children must ensure they always bring their gumshields into school as these must be worn when rugby is being played.

 END OF TERM  REPORTS

Reports will be sent in the next couple of days and, post permitting, should be with you before Christmas. As usual, the end of term envelope will also contain a number of other pieces of information including the draft Fasti for next term.

 PARENTS CONTACT LIST CONSENT FORM

As I am sure you are aware, under Data Protection, we are not allowed to give out your contact details to other parents without your explicit consent.

In order for you to give us this consent and so enable us to distribute class contact lists, etc. I would be grateful if you could complete the enclosed form and return it to the office.

If, for any reason, you do not want your details distributed, please contact the school office.  Thank you.

PARENT EVENINGS – TOP YEAR & 2nd YEAR

Parents’ evenings to be held next term are as follows:

 U6 – Tuesday 26th January from 6.30pm

 M6 – Thursday 11th February from 6.30pm

 2nd Year – 2A and 2B – Thursday 18th March from 6.00pm – 8.15pm

 DEBATES

Once again we have had a very successful term on the debating front. Topics for discussion have ranged from “Do we have the right to strike?” to “Should films and electronic games be rated?”

The motions are put up for debate mainly by members of U6 but it has been very encouraging to have pupils from lower down the school participating.

Well done to all the debaters who have regularly attended over the term.  A record 50 pupils turned up for the debate on whether or not we should pull our troops out of Afghanistan.

On the strength of the various arguments the house supported the following arguments – we should not pull our troops out of Afghanistan; we do have the right to strike; there should not be any restrictions on social networking sites and there should be some sort of rating system for films and games etc

The next debate promises to be a controversial one – “Should religion be taught in schools?” Mrs Williams has promised to attend!

PRIMARY MATHS CHALLENGE

In November, most of the under 11 pupils sat the Primary Maths Challenge, a multiple choice paper with some interesting questions – particularly the problems and puzzles.  This was the first time we had entered and 3 pupils, Jay Atherton, Jaeho Bae and Young Jae Lee received gold certificates for a mark of 20 out of 25 on a difficult paper.  Well done all those who took part and especially those who obtained a gold, silver or bronze result.

NATIONAL GALLERY - TAKE ONE PICTURE EXHIBITION 2010

We are delighted that we have been short-listed by the National Gallery for our whole school project - "Renoir, The Umbrellas". A representative of the gallery will be visiting Milbourne Lodge in January to view our pupils work.  We are hopeful that some of the material may be selected for the annual schools' exhibition at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square which will be on display during the summer of 2010.  This was a joint Art and ICT project, created by all our pupils during last term.

SAATCHI GALLERY - SCULPTURE AT SCHOOL PRIZE - NATIONAL SCHOOL SCULPTURE COMPETITION 2010

Following our success in this competition last year (2nd place overall), all Milbourne Lodge pupils will be creating individual sculptures during their Art lessons next term. Each pupil will be required to produce a sculpture on the theme 'Everyday Materials-Through the Looking Glass'.  The Art department is seeking donations of suitable materials that could be used to build these designs eg mirrors, clocks, clock faces, old books, old picture frames, old cameras, spectacles, window frames, CDs, DVDs, chess pieces / chess boards, old fish bowls and fish tanks plus any other reflective everyday objects (kitchen utensils etc). If required Mrs Bawden will arrange (a safe!) collection of materials. Thank you so much for your support.

KEWALA - TOUCH TYPING PROGRAMME

Congratulations to all the pupils in Class 1 and 2A /2B who have worked so hard this term to complete the online 'Kewala Touch Typing' course.  We are truly delighted with the progress they have made.  Certificates will be presented in January to those pupils who have already completed the Kewala Challenge.  Please note, for those pupils who have yet to finish, their current usernames and passwords will remain active until the end of August and we would encourage everyone to try to complete this course at their leisure at home.  Please advise Mrs Cary when your child reaches the end of the course so that they can obtain the official certificate of achievement. Thank you all for supporting your children in this task.

CHESS

On Friday 11th December Milbourne Lodge played an away match against St. Andrew’s and St. Mark’s in an 11 board chess match.  A very close game resulted in a 41/2 – 61/2 loss with the A team losing 0 – 4 (top 4 boards).  But the B team won 21/2 – 11/2 and the C team won 2 – 1.

Next term both Thursday and Friday chess groups will be entering the UK Chess Challenge.

 HOUSE FUNDRAISING EVENTS

A big thank you to both parents and pupils for your support at the House charity events this term.

 GREEN HOUSE

The Cake Sale at the House Sevens raised £101. This was followed by an X Factor assembly where the Oasis Tribute Band members Shivang Bhargava and Rohan Gupta had us rocking in the aisles; Ben Jackson and Louis Woods split our sides from laughter with a comedy act and Jaeho Bae soothed our minds with a rendition of the Harry Potter theme tune on his cello.

Altogether a grand total of £138.40 was raised for Kingston Hospital’s ‘Born Too Soon’ charity.

RED HOUSE

The Cake Sale on Wednesday raised an impressive total of £128.00 for Water Aid.  Many thanks for the delicious donations of festive cakes.
