MILBOURNE LODGE SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER

SUMMER 2010

12th July 2010

Dear Parents

It gives me great pleasure to send out the last newsletter of this academic year even though it will be my last newsletter as Head of Milbourne Lodge.

May I also take this opportunity to wish all our leavers the very best as they join their new schools. We very much look forward to hearing about their progress in due course.

SPORT

Cricket

The 1st X1 completed the season with two further matches recording a creditable draw against Parkside, the Surrey schools champions and a side containing six county players, and a defeat by a strong Rokeby side. A number of younger players have been selected in order to give them experience for next year, and we are hoping that more practice time can be built into our afternoon programme in order that the cricketing talent of our boys can be developed fully. We are grateful to Nicholas Winder, our outstanding cricketer this year, and to the other top year players who often found themselves playing in matches without any practice in between! They have done well to hold their own often against teams containing a number of county players and far more experienced cricketers, with one school playing 18 matches this term! As our cricket facilities improve and with some talented younger boys emerging within the school we are hopeful that we can emulate our fine victory over Danes Hill in future years!

The 2nd XI continued their season as they had done before two-thirds term.  There have been some fantastic individual performances but unfortunately this has not been matched by the team.  There was a certain football match being played on the same day as the Rokeby fixture so we decided to play a 20/20 match and this resulted in Rokeby winning comfortably.  I think a few of our boys were more interested in the football than cricket on this afternoon or so they say.  We then played Parkside - again this was always going to be a competitive fixture and, after losing the toss, we were put into bat.  Louis Woods and Henry Houghton contributed well with the bat and we amassed 91runs for 6.Parkside however made short work of this total as Milbourne bowled far too short and made it easy for the opposition.  This young side have performed well this season and I fully expect many of them to represent the 1st XI next year.

The ‘Mighty 3rds’ have enjoyed a vintage season, with creditable victories against Chinthurst, St Andrew’s, Hoe Bridge, Danes Hill, Lanesborough and Rokeby -  nearly 30 different boys participated at some point or other. Unfortunately, a 100% record was tarnished in the last fixture against Parkside (when we were bereft of five key players). Nevertheless, it was a fine season with many memorable moments. Well done to all those who participated!

The U10As concluded their season with quick fire matches against Rokeby and Parkside. In the Rokeby match we were disappointingly outplayed. Having bowled poorly with too many deliveries missing the stumps, we then lost Harwood and Winder relatively cheaply and with it any realistic chance of getting their total.

In the Parkside match, we again lost the aforementioned pair without the major contribution we have come to expect but there the similarity with the day before ended, as Henry Calvert and George Whalley slowly dug us out of trouble. Henry delivered with the bat (44 not out) having looked a talented player all season and George offered valuable support as the two visibly gained in confidence. We knew our final score of 88 was competitive but also realised we would probably have to bowl the opposition out to win. This we nearly did, taking the final wicket with the scores level, to tie the match for a second year in a row!

We took some great catches and bowled far better than the day before, with good spells from Islam, Calvert junior and Janmohamed who in an eventful last over, bowled two wides but also grabbed the all important final two wickets with O'Callaghan-Brown pulling off a great catch to dismiss the last Parkside batsman.

So, two wins, two losses and a tie for the season. The side has undoubtedly improved individually and collectively and will no doubt go on to serve the school very well in future seasons.

The B team played the same opposition, coming up a little short in both matches. However, all the players enjoyed their games and there were distinct signs of promise from the likes of Coleman, Montorio-Veronese & Evans.

Athletics

It has been an exciting term on the athletics front. A small, but select group of six athletes competed in the London area championships at Eton during two-thirds term. Between them they achieved three first places (Sean Rafique in the boys’ U13 100m and Oliver Kitto in the boys’ U13 hurdles and 200m); one second place (Charlie Bawden in the girls’ U14 1500m); one third place (Charlie Bawden in the girls’ U14 long jump) and two fourth places (William Hobday in the boys’ U13 high jump and Thomas Vanderstichele in the boys’ U14 400m with a new school record).

Sean Rafique and Oliver Kitto represented the London area in the IAPS National Championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Sean ran well to reach the final of the boys’ U13 100m and Oliver Kitto lived up to his potential, winning the gold medal in the boys’ U13 hurdles with an exceptional time of 11.03 secs.

Swimming

A full term of swimming has been enjoyed by all. Early in the term we played hosts to Chinthurst School and despite several notable swims from U9 to U13 swimmers we unfortunately lost. Later in the term the swimmers in the Epsom Superteams performed well - particularly the girls who won their age group category. At the annual City of London Freemans School swimming gala four teams represented Milbourne Lodge. All swimmers gave their best, with several top three swims being achieved. The final results were pleasing as the U13 boys won the event beating the six other competing schools, including last year’s national relay champions - the hosts City of London Freemans.

OUTING TO MACBETH

L6A & L6B studied Macbeth during the Spring Term and a timely invitation was received at the start of term from Epsom College for some of our children to watch their inaugural performance of arguably Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy. Mr Murphy and Mr Angus escorted the excited pupils to Epsom College. Although the narrative thread of the play remained faithful to the traditional script, the context of the play had been set in a contemporary parallel - namely the world of corporate London (with warriors fittingly replaced by bankers!) The production was expertly produced by members of the lower school, who fulfilled all of the acting parts as well as the ‘unseen’ package of backstage, lighting and music. There was even a minor celebrity on show, with Tyger Drew-Honey (from the popular sitcom Outnumbered on BBC1) playing the character of Banquo. It was a thoroughly exhilarating performance and sincere thanks goes to Epsom College for their excellent hospitality.

5th YEAR MATHS TEAM COMPETITION

On Friday 2nd July (before Sports Day), we took part in the K.C.S. Wimbleodn Cayley Challenge coming equal 3rd out of 40 schools – a very creditable performance.

The team was comprised of George Montorio-Veronese (Capt), Khusrau Islam, Young Jae Lee and Oliver Harwood. Well done!

FACEBOOK/MSN MESSAGING

The Elmbridge Police Youth Intervention Team have circulated information regarding the above and how this is becoming increasingly a concern as children become more computer literate – in many cases more so than their parents!

They advise that:

  • Facebook rules state that the site cannot be used by anyone unless they are over 13 years of age
  • Harassment is the prime misuse of the computer – essentially this is a form of bullying.

Two useful websites with further information and guidance on computer misuse are www.kidscape.org.uk and www.thinkyouknow.co.uk

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL FOR MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS/MUSIC EXAMS/FUTURE SCHOOL VISITS

Where children miss part of the school day in order to visit future schools or to sit a music exam etc could you please advise the school office of this at least 48 hours prior to the event.

This allows for the relevant teachers to be informed so that lesson plans are not too severely disrupted.

We respectfully ask that dental/doctor appointments are arranged out of school hours wherever possible. Where this is not possible, again we ask for at least 48 hours notice of the absence.

Holidays should be booked to take place within the ample school holiday periods.

MLPA

A sincere thank you to the MLPA committee for all their hard work over the past academic year. The amount of work which goes on ‘behind the scenes’ to make all the events a success is phenomenal and their dedication and efforts are very much appreciated.

With best wishes for a happy and relaxing summer holiday and every good wish to you all for the future.
