The fundamental aim of studying English at Milbourne Lodge is to engender each pupil with a love and understanding of the many different genres of literature from a huge variety of cultures and contexts. Many Old Milbournians study English at A-Level and beyond, citing a love of the subject fostered in their formative years at Milbourne as a key reason for their choice.

In terms of examinations, great emphasis is placed within the curriculum on the preparation of pupils for the 11+ pre-tests as well as for Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations to senior schools. Results are consistently outstanding, reflecting the passion and expertise with which this subject is delivered throughout the school.
