The fundamental aim of studying English at Milbourne Lodge is to engender each pupil with a love, and understanding of, many different genres of literature from a huge variety of cultures and contexts. Many Old Milbournians study English at A-Level and beyond, citing a love of the subject fostered in their formative years at Milbourne as a key reason for their choice - and in terms of examinations, great emphasis is placed within the curriculum on the preparation of pupils for the 11+ pre-tests as well as the 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations to senior schools. Results are consistently outstanding, reflecting the passion and expertise with which this subject is delivered throughout the school.

English lessons at Milbourne incorporate the teaching and learning of: comprehension skills, poetry analysis, expressive reading, handwriting, grammar, creative writing, essay technique, ICT, spelling and vocabulary work.
